USS Spiegel Grove Ship
The USS Spiegel Grove ship started it's mission in 1956 as a Navy ship. One of it's duties included
transporting landing craft and combat troops to shore during the Cold War. In 1960's embarked
on a goodwill cruise to deliver medical supplies in Africa. Spiegel grove also assisted in
cargo shipments, Caribbean military testing and manned space flights, includinng the 1971
Apollo 14 moon mission. The ship was decommissioned in 1989. The 510-foot Spiegel Grove,
a retired U.S. Navy Ship Dock slipped beneath the waves June 10, 2002, and settled on it's
side, becoming the largest ship ever sunk intentionally creating an artificial reef.
In July 2005, hurricane Dennis blew by Florida Keys,
leaving behind an unexpected benefit. After sitting on it's side for 3 years, The USS
Spiegel Grove was turned upright, which was originally planned position of the ship when
intentionally sinking ship in 2002.
Now it's more exciting than ever to dive on this ship.
These days the divers have a whole new perspective on
one of the largest artificial reefs in the world. The Spiegel's Grove's deck now sits at
about 95feet, the top of the wheelhouse at 65 feet and the tops of the cranes at only 45 feet.
This ship these days is probably the best known artificial reef in the world creating true underwater paradise
for advanced scuba divers from all around the world.
